Austin-Based Laser Accelerator Startup TAU Systems Raises $20M Seed Funding to Expand R&D and Launch TAU Labs

Austin, United States, April 29, 2025 —
TAU Systems, a deep-tech startup, has raised USD 20M in a Seed funding round led by Quantonation, with participation from Alumni Ventures, Impact Ventures, Team Global, UT Seed Fund, and a group of private investors. The round, closed on April 29, 2025, will support the company’s mission to commercialize compact laser-driven particle accelerator technology for use in advanced imaging, space radiation testing, and scientific research.

About TAU Systems

Founded in 2021, TAU Systems is developing ultra-fast, compact laser-plasma accelerators that dramatically reduce the size and cost of traditional particle accelerator infrastructure. Its flagship center, TAU Labs, will be based in Carlsbad, California and serve both commercial clients and public research institutions. The company is already preparing to begin operations with its first customer — a major satellite manufacturer.

Purpose of financing

TAU’s particle accelerator technology enables high-energy applications that traditionally required multi-billion-dollar facilities. These include radiation testing for aerospace electronics, semiconductor metrology, biomedical imaging, materials science, and even high-energy physics. The miniaturization and cost efficiency of TAU’s systems open new commercial avenues in both government and industrial sectors.

With the newly secured funds, TAU Systems plans to finalize the setup of its Carlsbad accelerator center and expand collaborative research programs with institutions like DARPA and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. These initiatives will help develop use cases such as radiation-testing-as-a-service and x-ray beam applications in sectors like space, healthcare, and manufacturing.

CEO’s Insights

Bjorn Manuel Hegelich, TAU Systems CEO, said:
“We are building the next generation of accelerators that can democratize access to high-energy beams”. “This funding round accelerates our journey toward commercial deployment and deep collaboration with key scientific and industrial partners.”

Conclusion

The seed round brings TAU Systems’ total funding to USD 35M. With a growing customer base and cutting-edge technology, the company is positioning itself as a disruptive force in high-energy laser systems and applied physics.
