British AI-powered Tax Startup Filed raises $17.2M Seed Round to Modernize the Accounting Industry

London, England, United Kingdom –
Filed, an AI-driven tax software startup, has raised $17.2M USD in a Seed funding round to revolutionize the accounting industry. The funding round, announced on May 21, 2025, was led by Northzone and saw participation from Day One Ventures, Greens Ventures, J Ventures, Neo, and Raine Ventures. Filed, founded in 2017, plans to use the fresh capital to expand its engineering team and accelerate development of its AI-powered tax automation platform.

About Filed

Founded to streamline and modernise the tax preparation process, Filed aims to transform how tax firms operate by fully automating the tax return lifecycle. Co-founded by CEO Leroy Kerry and CTO Atul Ramachandran, the company has built software that reads tax documents, understands firm-specific tax strategies, and inputs data directly into existing software systems. Unlike competitors that require firms to overhaul their tech stack, Filed integrates seamlessly into existing workflows. The platform also identifies cases needing human intervention, allowing CPAs to remain in control while offloading repetitive tasks to AI.

Purpose of financing

With the accounting profession facing mounting pressure—an aging workforce and declining number of new professionals—Filed is positioned to fill critical labor gaps. According to Kerry, “The tax industry is facing a genuine crisis. Firms simply don’t have enough people to process returns efficiently. Meanwhile, professionals are drowning in paperwork, spending nearly half their time on low-value tasks that could be automated.”

CEO’s Insights

CEO of Filed, Leroy Kerry, said:
Filed’s solution promises significant productivity gains for tax professionals. “It’s not just about speeding up returns”. “It’s about changing the way firms work—keeping humans focused on high-value strategy while software handles the grunt work.”
Filed plans to use the funding to scale its engineering team, build out its AI capabilities, and deepen integrations with major tax software systems. “Our long-term vision extends beyond return preparation to become the foundational AI infrastructure for the entire tax industry — transforming everything from client collaboration to document management and audit preparation”.
“The industry has been waiting for its AI moment, and we’re just getting started”.

Conclusion

Founded by Kerry, who grew up in South London in public housing, Filed reflects a journey shaped by grit and ambition. After a career that included working at high-growth startups in the UK and Sweden, he launched Filed in the U.S. after spending time observing the inefficiencies of small tax firms in Colorado and Arizona.
With strong backing from leading VCs and a clear mission, Filed is poised to redefine the future of tax automation.
